This training module offers strategies for healthcare providers using motivational interviewing (MI)—a collaborative, goal-oriented method of communication—with adolescents who have overweight/obesity. This counseling technique pairs sensitive, respectful communication with the adolescent desire for autonomy to develop her own strategies for weight management and strengthen her motivation for change. The webinar presentation will include, 1) defining MI, including how it differs from other counseling approaches; 2) describing the main conceptual underpinnings of MI, e.g., patient-centeredness and autonomy support; 3) Describing the basic techniques used in MI, e.g., reflective listening and eliciting change talk; and 4) Describing how MI can be applied to weight counseling for adolescent girls.
