Course Description

This activity is designed to increase awareness among healthcare practitioners of the potential adverse health effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure and to increase practitioner’s ability to use a methodology of assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment as suggested by international medical specialty groups for assessing EMF associated illness. Learners will become familiar with the evidence that exists regarding the relationship of EMF exposure to specific health conditions, the tools necessary to assess exposure, and strategies for avoidance. At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to identify, diagnose, and treat conditions that may be associated with EMF exposure.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, physician assistants, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the biological and/or health effects of electromagnetic fields (extremely low frequencies and/or radio frequencies, as high as 300 GHZ) on humans, animals, plants, or microbes.
  • Identify, diagnose, and treat symptoms/adverse health effects that may be associated with EMF exposure.
  • Identify the peer-reviewed medical and scientific research on EMF exposure.
  • Consider the risk versus benefit of currently described laboratory testing on patients with self-reported electro-sensitivity.
  • Assess exposure to EMF using intake questionnaires and review of patient symptoms.
  • Identify physical exam findings consistent with EMF overexposure.
  • Describe the effects of electrical and magnetic fields (EMF/ELF) and electromagnetic radiofrequency radiation (EMF/RFR) exposure on the dermatologic, immune, nervous, cardiovascular and reproductive systems.
  • Write medical letters documenting EMF associated illness to help patients receive greater health protection, access and accommodation.
  • Explain and justify the evidence for behavioral changes related to electronic device usage and exposure.
  • Discuss studies that show how recurring indoor mold exposure in damp buildings can cause a variety of adverse health effects.
  • Recognize how EMF testing is conducted and which mitigations are most effective.
  • Recommend EMF protection measures, preventive health practices, self-care and resiliency strategies.
  • Discuss existing and proposed public policies related to the wireless communications infrastructure and devices, FCC’s EMF/RFR human exposure guidelines, international organization’s guidelines and the impact of these laws and rules on human health and wellbeing.
