Management of Atrial Fibrillation in Athletes: Understanding AF in Athletes
This episode provides a foundational overview of atrial fibrillation in athletes, focusing on how exercise type, intensity, duration, age, sex, genetics, and pre-existing conditions influence arrhythmia risk. Learners review structural and electrical adaptations of the athlete’s heart, explore unique mechanisms contributing to atrial fibrillation, and examine diagnostic challenges related to distinguishing normal exercise-induced remodeling from cardiac pathology. Emphasis is placed on improving recognition and differential diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in athletic populations using current evidence and guideline-informed concepts.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for an audience of Athletic Trainers, Nurses and Physicians.
Learning Objectives
- Indentiffy special considerations for the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation in athelets suspected of having atrial fibrillation.
- Summerize clinical evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of catheter ablation.
Commercial Support
This activity is supported from an independent medical education grant from Biosense Webster, Inc. and Boston Scientific.
