
Optimizing Care for Patients with Sport-Related Concussion
This activity aims to equip athletic trainers (ATs) with the current evidence-based strategies for the evaluation and management of SRCs. By enhancing understanding and application of recent guidelines, ATs can optimize care and improve outcomes for athletes diagnosed with concussions.

Ashley Marshall, PhD, ATC
Dr. Ashley Marshall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at Appalachian State University. In her role, she teaches a number of courses in the CAATE accredited professional athletic training program. Dr. Marshall has worked in a number of different settings and continues to serve the community and profession.
Dr. Marshall also serves as an Athletic Trainer and Coordinator of Concussion Research for USA Swimming, along with a Volunteer Medical Provider with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. In this role, she has served on the medical staff for 2 Olympic Games and numerous other domestic and international events.
Ashley Long, PhD, LAT, ATC, CBIS
Dr. Ashley Long has over 20 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer. Dr. Long is the founder and owner of Neuro Active, a company focused on concussion education and assessment that collaborates with physician practices to provide evaluation, treatment, and care for athletes with concussions.
Before founding Neuro Active, Dr. Long established and coordinated the concussion clinic at Mt. Olive Family Medicine Center, a state-designated rural health center in eastern North Carolina. This clinic was supported by grants from the Carolina Panthers Charities, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and direct funds awarded by the general assembly through the North Carolina state budget.
Dr. Long has conducted research on the cumulative effects of repetitive hits on the developing brains of high school athletes and has explored student-athlete mental health, particularly focusing on biases in depression screening tools used during pre-participation physical examinations. Her volunteer work with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association spans various roles at both the state and national levels. In 2023, she was honored with the Bill Griffin Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer award by the North Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Dr. Long is dedicated to ensuring that athletes in rural and underserved areas receive the same high-quality care for sport-related concussions as those in more urban settings.
