Introduction to Cannulas
Cannulas are an increasingly valuable tool in aesthetic medicine, offering injectors an alternative approach to dermal filler and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) delivery. When used by appropriately trained and experienced providers, cannulas may help reduce the risk of bruising, vascular injury, and downtime while allowing for smoother, more controlled product placement.
This course is designed to introduce learners to the fundamental principles of cannula use in aesthetic injections. Participants will gain an understanding of cannula design, indications, and advantages compared to traditional needle techniques. Emphasis will be placed on patient selection, anatomical considerations, and safe entry point strategies to optimize outcomes and minimize risk.
Through a combination of didactic instruction and practical guidance, learners will explore techniques for delivering dermal fillers across broader treatment areas using fewer entry points. By the end of the activity, participants will be better equipped to incorporate cannulas into their practice as a safe and effective adjunct to needle-based injection techniques.
Target Audience
This course is designed for licensed medical professionals who have completed foundational dermal filler training and are seeking to advance their skills through the use of cannula techniques. Eligible participants include Registered Nurses (RNs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Physician Assistants (PAs), Physicians (MDs/DOs), and Dentists (DMD/DDS).
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to: Examine the difference in injection techniques: needle versus cannula Discuss indications for the use of cannulas Review facial anatomy and vasculature Explore the properties of cannulas Review the benefits and risks of using a cannula
