
Florida LPN IV Therapy Certification
Welcome to the AKH, Florida Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Intravenous (IV) therapy course. We are committed to advancing your knowledge in IV therapy to improve patient outcomes.
Course Goals
This course is designed to provide the LPN and Graduate Practical Nurse (GPN) with comprehensive knowledge in IV therapy including managing Central Venous (CV) lines.
Steps for Successful Completion
This course utilizes and provides a video and downloadable PDFs as a basis for the course.
To meet the Florida Board of Nursing requirements for an IV therapy certificate, the LPN or GPN must:
- Watch the video in its entirety.
- Download the PDF monograph and study the information carefully. Please review the pages of information and integrate the concepts as you view the video component.
- The post-test and answer sheet are included in the monograph. You will need to print the answer sheet, mark your answers and return to AKH for grading.
- Earn a minimal score of 80% on the examination (one retake is permitted if score is below 80%).
- Download the PDF proficiency skills checklist and complete the checklist under the supervision of a Florida Licensed Registered Nurse (RN). You must have access to a facility where a FL licensed RN can complete the skills checklist with you. We do not provide an RN or facility for you.
- Please email or fax the completed clinical skills checklist and post-test answer sheet to AKH.
- Upon successful completion of the post-test and the skills checklist, 30 contact hours will be awarded. We will email you a certificate of completion and report your completion to CEBroker within 24 hours of receiving your materials. No partial credit can be earned.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for an audience of LPNs and Graduate Practical Nurses (GPNs).
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the LPNs role in IV therapy, IV infusions, and managing central lines as identified in the Florida Nurse Practice Act (NPA) and your facility or agency’s policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) in IV therapy as defined by Florida Nurse Practice Act.
- Understand LPNs in the state of Florida provide IV therapy under the direct supervision of a RN licensed in Florida.
- Explain the legal aspects of IV therapy by LPNs including the policies and procedures of the institution.
- Recognize medical terminology pertinent to IV therapy and documentation.
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of peripheral veins LPNs may access for venipuncture.
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of central venous access “medical specialist” may access for IV therapy.
- Perform a venipuncture utilizing the principles of infection control in IV therapy.
- Identify the role of the LPN to monitor, maintain, and report adverse effects of IV site and infusion.
- Identify signs and symptoms of IV therapy complications including specific interventions.
- List indications for a peripheral and central venous heparin lock.
- Calculate IV fluids rates of administration.
- Discuss the difference in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN).
- Describe the role of the LPN in the administration of IV medications.
- Describe the role of the LPN to care for a client receiving chemotherapy.
- Verbalize information about blood transfusions including indications, types of reactions, complications and the role of the LPN to care for clients receiving blood and blood products.
