Stephen C. Yang, MD, FACS, MAMSE is Professor of Surgery and Medical Oncology, and the Arthur B. and Patricia B. Modell Endowed Chair in Thoracic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He serves as Vice-Chair of Professional Development for the Department of Surgery. He formerly served as Division Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Inaugural Director of Adult and Pediatric Lung Transplantation, and Director of the Surgical Clerkship and Curriculum. He is the faculty advisor for the Surgery Interest Group, and the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association. His teaching, research and clinical service awards include the: 1997 American Association for Thoracic Surgery Andrew Morrow Research Scholar; 2006 TSDA Socrates Award; 2006 STS J. Maxwell Chamberlain Award; 2008 Johns Hopkins Dean’s Award as Clinical Teacher of the Year; 2019 induction into The Johns Hopkins Distinguished Teaching Society; 2020 AOA Honor Society at MCV; 2020 election to the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators; and 2024 honorary member of the Women in Thoracic Surgery.
His clinical interests involve all aspects of general thoracic surgery, with emphasis in lung and esophageal cancer biology/survivorship, pectus excavatum, robotics surgery, patient safety/outcomes, geriatric thoracic surgery and enhancing the educational paradigm for medical students, residents, and junior faculty. He started robotic surgery in 2002 and recently he performed his 1500th robotic case.
He is the immediate past Examination Chair and Editor-in-Chief of SESATS XIII and remains as Consultant to the Board. He is the immediate past Chair of the Medical Student Education Committee for the ACS. He serves on the Thoracic Surgery RRC for the ACGME, and immediate past Council Chair and the 71st Past President of the STSA. He is current President of the TSDA. He was the JTCVS Associate Editor for the education section. He has also established two successful national long-running mentoring programs for medical students and residents – “Looking to the Future” for the STS in 2006, and “The Brooks Scholarship” for the STSA in 2010. He was co-founder of the Esophageal Cancer Action Network to promote the disease awareness.
An empty nester of three grown children (who are off the Yang payroll but borrows frequently, he lives with his wife Marivic of 42 years in Hunt Valley, MD, and enjoys playing lounge piano music, tennis/pickleball, “Chopped” cooking, taking care of his puppy Milo, and ballroom dancing, winning the 2017 Johns Hopkins Dancing with the Stars.
