Gregory Poland, MD, MATh, FIDSA, MACP, FRCP (London)

Dr. Gregory A. Poland is a physician-scientist and the founding and current director of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group. The Poland lab developed the field of viral vaccine immunogenetics, the immune response network theory, and the fields of vaccinomics, adversomics, and quantum vaccinology. His group has been awarded over $250 million in competitive extramural research funding and been continuously NIH-funded since 1990. He has published over 800 scientific papers and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals such as The Lancet Infectious Diseases, PLoS One, NEJM, JAMA, JID, and Vaccine. Dr. Poland is the emeritus Editor-in-Chief of the journal Vaccine. He has given over 1,000 symposia lectures and presentations.
Dr. Poland holds the academic rank of the Endowed Mary Lowell Leary Emeritus Professor of Medicine with joint apointments in pediatric and adult infectious diseases and molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics. He is a Distiguished Investigator of the Mayo Clinic, and the President of the Atria Academy of Medicine and Science.
In 2023 Dr. Poland was ranked #4 globally in the field of vaccinology by ScholarGPS. In 2022 Dr. Poland was ranked in the top 0.08% of most cited scientists in the field of virology. In 2022 he was nominated for a Pulitzer prize in the category of Audio Recordings for his weekly podcasts on the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Dr. Poland received his medical degree from the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois and completed his residency at the University of Minnesota/Abbott-Northwestern program, and advanced post-graduate course work in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Clinical Trial Design at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. In 2022 Dr. Poland received his Master of Arts in Theological Studies from the Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, PA. Dr. Poland is bivocational and in July 2024 after completing ordination examinations was ordained and installed as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in America.
