Dr. Nathan Wong is a cardiovascular epidemiologist, specialist in preventive cardiology, and Professor and Director, Heart Disease Prevention Program, Mary and Steve Wen Cardiovascular Division and Co-Director of the Center for Global Cardiometabolic Health and Nutrition at the University of California, Irvine with joint appointments in epidemiology at UC Irvine and UCLA and population health and disease prevention at UC Irvine. He holds MPH and PhD degrees in epidemiology from Yale University and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, National Lipid Association (NLA), and master of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC). He is a past president of the ASPC, Pacific Lipid Association chapter of the NLA, and the InterAmerican Heart Foundation which addresses cardiovascular health in Latin America and the Caribbean. He is a current co-chair of the California ACC Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Committee and a past chair of the American Heart Association Prevention Science Committee and California Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Coalition.
Dr. Wong’s research interests include cardiovascular risk assessment and subclinical atherosclerosis, where he did pioneering work on coronary calcium since the early 1990’s, and the epidemiology and management of dyslipidemia, diabetes, and obesity in relation to cardiovascular disease, including research on residual dyslipidemia, lipoprotein(a), and cardiovascular disease prevention. He has been an investigator or collaborator for many years with the NIH sponsored Framingham Heart Study, Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and other large-scale studies and was a co-principal investigator at UC Irvine for the Women’s Health Initiative. He has been an investigator or co-investigator for numerous clinical trials of statin and more recent non-statin clinical trials, including for lipoprotein(a). He has authored over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts, co-edited 8 textbooks related to preventive cardiology, including Preventive Cardiology a companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease, and is on the editorial board of several cardiology and diabetes-related journals, including currently serving as an associate editor of JACC Asia and cardiovascular medicine editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Medicine. He is served as founding executive editor followed by co-editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology from 2020-2025. He is a recipient of the ASPC Joseph Stokes Award for lifetime achievement in preventive cardiology and lifetime achievement award in clinical research from the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
