Shirin Doroudgar, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. She is recognized for her research on protein homeostasis and cellular stress responses in the heart, particularly their roles in heart disease and failure. Dr. Doroudgar earned her PhD in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, and San Diego State University, where she identified the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response as a key regulator of cardiac cell survival during ischemia. She completed postdoctoral training at San Diego State University, uncovering a mechanism by which ER calcium depletion regulates protein secretion, and at Heidelberg University, where she demonstrated the role of translational control in early gene expression changes during cardiac hypertrophy. As a junior research group leader at Heidelberg University, she focused on protein synthesis regulation in heart disease. Now leading a research program at the University of Arizona, she investigates mRNA translation and cardiomyocyte protein secretion to identify novel therapeutic targets.
