Joshua D. Hutcheson, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center for Innovation in Cardiovascular Health and an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University. He directs a multidisciplinary research program focused on the mechanisms of cardiovascular calcification and vascular remodeling, with an emphasis on extracellular vesicle–mediated mineralization, heart valve disease, and the “calcification paradox” linking vascular and bone biology. Dr. Hutcheson has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, co-edited the book Cardiovascular Calcification and Bone Mineralization, co-authored the chapter on Molecular Mechanisms of Calcific Aortic Valve Disease in the Valvular Heart Disease Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease, and holds multiple U.S. patents in cardiovascular therapeutics and diagnostics. His research has been continuously supported by the NIH, the American Heart Association, and the Florida Heart Research Foundation (FHRF), among others. In addition to his research, Dr. Hutcheson directs the Coulter Undergraduate Research Excellence (CURE) Program and serves as Director of the FIU-FHRF Center for Innovation in Cardiovascular Health, fostering translational training and community engagement in cardiovascular research and engineering. In recognition of his efforts, Dr. Hutcheson was named the Stop Heart Disease Researcher of the Year by the Florida Heart Research Foundation in 2018, received a Young Innovator Award from Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering in 2023, and was recently elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association and Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
