Drawn to Medicine Physician Retreat

November 2, 2026 to November 6, 2026

The Drawn to Medicine Physician Retreat is a 5-day restorative and enriching experience for physicians seeking to enhance their mental health and build resilience through artistic embodiment practices.  Through small group reflection, mindfulness tools, and creative art practices, including writing, drawing, and dance, participants gain greater understanding of  interventions that can help reduce stress and anxiety and sustain and improve clinical practice.

Prior to the retreat, participants gather virtually to explore retreat themes through readings and group reflection, identify personal strengths and opportunities, and generate cohort relationships.  During the retreat, participants receive individual coaching sessions to discuss goals, learnings, and insights.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for practicing physicians involved in direct patient care who experience ethical conflict, burnout, or compassion fatigue in their professional roles.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the concepts of moral stress, moral distress and moral injury and how each can contribute to the psychological strain experienced by healthcare workers; left unaddressed, these conditions can result in burnout and attrition.
  • Understand how embodiment practices can address personal and collective harms, including moral distress and moral injury, by alleviating emotional strain and psychological rigidity.
  • Explain how different expressive arts including writing, drawing and dance, function as restorative embodiment practices for processing emotion, reducing stress, and enhancing self-awareness.
  • Practice expressive arts through drawing, writing, and dance to notice changes in awareness, curiosity, patience, and empathy – all tools used daily in clinical practice.
  • Identify and develop at least one personalized expressive arts practice and create intention to integrate that practice into a routine.
  • Explore the creative arts as a potential tool for systems-level intervention to interrupt physician distress and sustain clinical careers.
