Gretchen Wells, MD, PhD, FACC

Dr. Wells is Professor of Medicine at UAB Heersink School of Medicine where she is Director of the Women's Heart Health Program and Director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Trials Unit. Prior to UAB, she held numerous positions at Wake Forest School of Medicine including Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean of Admissions. She served as the inaugural Thomas Whayne Professor of Women's Heart Health at the University of Kentucky. While at Kentucky, she served as treasurer and later governor of the Kentucky chapter of the American College of Cardiology. She is involved in clinical research including the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) where she has served on the steering committee and chaired the publications and presentations committee. She is the recipient of the 2020 American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award. She is a 2011 graduate of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program for women and later served on its national alumni advisory board. She has served on a number of non-profit boards.
