Biography: Dr. Nichol Salvo serves dually as the National Podiatric Medical Director, Specialty Care Program Office, VACO and as podiatry section chief at the Atlanta VA Health Care System (VAHCS). As National Director, Dr. Salvo is responsible for the national Preventing Amputations in Veterans Everywhere (PAVE) and the Remote Patient Pedal Monitoring (RPPM) programs, both designed to reduce the risk of amputation. She is a 2024 Senior Innovation Fellow with the VHA Innovation Ecosystem given her innovative approach to delivering podiatric care to at-risk Veterans. In collaboration with VA leadership, Dr. Salvo created the High-risk Eye and Limb Preservation Program (HELPP) to deliver basic foot care services and eye screening to patients at increased risk for amputation and blindness. The program has demonstrated tremendous impact on Veteran access to care and reduction in amputation rates. As a result, HELPP is now deploying enterprise wide in partnership with the VHA Office of Rural Health to deliver preventative basic foot care services to rural and vulnerable Veterans. Dr. Salvo has devoted her career to federal services and amputation prevention. In her motivation to further address Veteran limb loss, she established the Atlanta VAHCS Podiatry Limb Preservation Fellowship training program in 2022. Dr. Salvo earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in 2004. She completed a 36-month podiatric medicine and surgery residency training program at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. She is board-certified with both the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. She recently completed the 2023 cohort Leadership VA (LVA) and the 2024 VA Health Care Leadership Development Program (HCLDP).
