The Metabolic Syndrome Network: Physiology, Pharmacology, and Practice
This accredited CE activity examines metabolic syndrome as a set of interrelated physiological processes — adipose tissue dysfunction, insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidemia, and chronic inflammation — rather than a collection of separate diagnoses. The shared mechanisms connecting these processes to downstream conditions including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease are reviewed. This activity also covers the pharmacologic classes used to address these mechanisms, limitations in current clinical trial evidence for patients with overlapping conditions, and the role of lifestyle intervention alongside pharmacotherapy.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for an interprofessional audience involved in the care of patients with metabolic syndrome and its related conditions, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, registered nurses and registered dietitians.
Learning Objectives
- Summarize how adipose tissue dysfunction, insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidemia, and chronic inflammation contribute to metabolic syndrome and how individuals differ.
- Outline how major drug classes act on factors contributing to metabolic syndrome and their shared molecular pathways.
- Identify adverse effects and monitoring considerations for patients being treated for metabolic syndrome, including areas of scientific uncertainty.
- Describe the limitations of current evidence for patients with overlapping metabolic, cardiovascular, and renal conditions, and the practical factors shaping treatment access.
- Identify the overlap between lifestyle intervention and pharmacotherapy, and the shared knowledge base supporting interprofessional care.
