HOPE ECHO - Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences - Session 1
HOPE ECHO Session 1: Foundations of HOPE: From ACEs to Positive Childhood Experiences
Traditional approaches to child adversity count risk. HOPE (Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences) asks a complementary question: what protects children who thrive despite adversity? This opening session introduces the HOPE framework, developed from a 2017 literature review by Dr. Robert Sege and Allyson Harper Browne, and its four evidence-based building blocks: Relationships, Environment, Engagement, and Emotional Growth. Participants will learn how Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) can buffer the effects of ACEs, and how a strengths-based lens can sit alongside, rather than replace, routine risk assessment.
The session follows Project ECHO's tele-mentoring model. A brief didactic is followed by a de-identified case presentation, so participants practice reframing a real case around the protective factors already present. It is designed for pediatricians and primary care clinicians from the Palm Beach and Treasure Coast area, open to pediatricians from across Florida, along with therapists, home visitors, early childhood educators, and care coordinators. It is the first of ten monthly sessions.
Target Audience
Pediatricians and primary care clinicians (pediatric medicine, family practice), with a focus on the Palm Beach and Treasure Coast area. Also intended for therapists and counselors (LCSW, LMHC), home visitors, early childhood educators, and care coordinators who serve children and families. Open to any pediatrician in Florida.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Define Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and explain how they relate to, and can buffer the effects of, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
- Identify the Four Building Blocks of HOPE (Relationships, Environment, Engagement, and Emotional Growth) and give one example of each in a pediatric or child-serving setting.
- Differentiate deficit-based from strengths-based approaches to assessing and documenting a child's and family's circumstances.
- Apply a strengths-based reframe to a de-identified case, naming at least one Building Block already present in the child's life.
