Shedding Light on Photobiomodulation: Current Evidence and Recommendations in Sports Rehabilitation

There is a critical gap in athletic training and sports medicine rehabilitation regarding the understanding and application of photobiomodulation. This activity is designed to enhance practitioners’ knowledge of how photobiomodulation works at the cellular level, outline safe parameters for clinical use, and provide strategies to effectively educate patients about at-home devices. By addressing both the current evidence for benefits and the areas where additional research is needed, the activity will equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively integrate this modality into practice. Within the scope of athletic training, where the use of modalities is permitted, this education supports improved decision-making, patient communication, and ultimately better outcomes in rehabilitation and recovery.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for an audience of Physicians, Nurses and Athletic Trainers.

Learning Objectives

  • Define photobiomodulation and distinguish between different classes of therapeutic lasers and light-emitting devices used in clinical practice.
  • Explain the cellular and physiological mechanisms of action of photobiomodulation, including the role of cytochrome c oxidase, ATP production, and modulation of reactive oxygen species.
  • List World Association for Laser Therapy (WALT) recommendations and recognize the key safety precautions and contraindications when using photobiomodulation devices.
