Screening, Detection, And Intervention for Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence

Domestic violence education for health care providers is required under section 456.031 of the Florida Statutes, based on recommendations of Florida’s Task Force on Domestic Violence, established by Governor Lawton Chiles in 1993. This Task Force determined that, based on domestic violence prevalence statistics, Florida health care professionals are virtually certain to encounter victims in their practice, and should be equipped to recognize and identify signs and symptoms, accurately and comprehensively perform clinical assessments, and deliver education and referral information. This course is designed to provide instruction in these areas.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses and other health care providers involved in pediatric care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

Define domestic violence and its impacts on health care
Cite general prevalence of domestic violence nationally and statewide.
Identify risk factors and describe screening procedures for determining whether a patient has a history of being either a victim or a perpetrator of domestic violence.
Learn how to provide such patients with information about or refer them to resources in the community.
Understand and comply with mandatory reporting requirements.

Criteria for Success
You must participate in the entire enduring activity to receive credit. Upon completion of the activity, you will be directed to an online post-test. To obtain a certificate of completion, a score of 70% or better on the post-test is required. Following the post-test you will be directed to the activity evaluation.
