MASH Management in the Era of Disease-Specific Therapies: Implementing Screen, Stage, Treat Paradigms in Clinical Practice
Despite broad recognition of the growing burden of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), clinicians have long navigated a fragmented guideline landscape, with national and international recommendations often diverging on screening approaches, noninvasive testing thresholds, treatment eligibility, and monitoring. The discordance has contributed to inconsistent implementation and suboptimal management of at-risk patients. The 2026 updated global consensus recommendations for MASLD/MASH were developed to address this directly, harmonizing guidance across clinical domains through a rigorous Delphi-based process and producing unified, clinician-ready algorithms from screening through treatment.
In this activity, Drs. Naim Alkhouri, Meena Bansal, and Sonal Kumar translate the the 2026 updated global consensus recommendations into practical, guideline-aligned approaches for everyday care. Topics span the full consensus framework, from initial screening and risk stratification to noninvasive testing algorithms, lifestyle and pharmacotherapy recommendations (including updated guidance on thyroid hormone receptor-β [THR-β] agonists and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists [GLP-1RAs]), and treatment monitoring and response assessment. A real-world patient case walks through recognition driven decision-making across the Screen, Stage, Treat paradigm, giving clinicians a working framework they can apply directly in their own practice.
Target Audience
This initiative is intended for gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology, diabetology, and other specialty health care providers involved in the management of patients with MASLD/MASH.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
- Evaluate clinical trial and real-world evidence of metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (MASH) treatment options considering MASH resolution, fibrosis, and other clinical and patient-reported outcomes
- Identify best practices for establishing a non-invasive and timely diagnosis of metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)/MASH to support access to disease-specific therapy
- Develop guideline-aligned management paradigms for MASLD/MASH that incorporate pharmacotherapy tailored to individual clinical scenarios
