Joseph Russo, Joseph A Russo, MD

Board-certified and Harvard-trained plastic surgeon, Joseph A. Russo, MD, has spent more than 30 years in private practice outside Boston. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply engaged in the evolution of non-surgical treatment options—long before aesthetic medicine became the dynamic field it is today.
In the late 1990s, Dr. Russo played a role in advancing early generations of laser technology and was among the first adopters of cosmetic neurotoxins and dermal fillers in the Northeast. Recognizing the potential of a more comprehensive approach to aesthetic care, he expanded his practice beyond traditional surgery to include nurse injectors, laser technicians, and highly trained ancillary staff. This model helped establish a fully integrated cosmetic center offering a wide range of rejuvenative treatments. Midway through his career, Dr. Russo recognized that his future in medicine would extend well beyond the operating room.
By 2010, the medical aesthetics industry was rapidly expanding—bringing innovation, but also inconsistency and risk. As demand surged, so did the number of untrained or underqualified providers entering the field, ultimately compromising patient safety and the credibility of the specialty.
Motivated to bring structure, safety, and clinical excellence to this emerging space, Dr. Russo founded Aesthetic Mentor (Aesthetic Institute of Massachusetts) in 2013. His mission was to equip medical professionals—particularly nurses—with the knowledge, technical skill, and clinical judgment required to perform aesthetic procedures safely and effectively.
