Antibiotic Stewardship is Infection Prevention
This activity incorporates the CDC’s Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship for Nursing Homes and Infection Prevention guidelines.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for an audience of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, and physician associates.
Learning Objectives
The objectives for the evaluation course object are:
- Describe the relationship between infection prevention (IP) and antibiotic stewardship (AS) programs, including their shared goals in reducing healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.
- Identify key regulatory requirements and CDC Core Elements that guide antibiotic stewardship implementation in long-term care facilities.
- Apply clinical and surveillance criteria (e.g., Loeb and McGeer) to case examples in order to evaluate appropriate antibiotic use and infection management decisions.
- Develop practical strategies to integrate infection prevention tracking, antibiotic use monitoring, and communication tools to strengthen stewardship activities in healthcare settings.
