GI Clinical Cases & Functional Testing

September 11, 2026

Functional gastrointestinal testing can provide valuable information about digestive function, inflammation, intestinal barrier integrity, and microbial activity, but appropriate test selection and interpretation require integration with the patient’s clinical presentation. This one-hour, case-based continuing education program uses two patient cases to demonstrate the clinical reasoning involved in selecting and interpreting functional GI testing and translating relevant findings into patient care. Two clinicians will guide participants through patient history, prior conventional evaluation, test selection, interpretation of stool and breath testing, and identification of clinically actionable versus incidental, diet-related, or potentially misleading findings. Common testing limitations and sources of false-positive and false-negative results will also be addressed. Participants will learn how to integrate the clinical presentation and relevant testing results into a sequenced therapeutic plan using the 5R framework, with consideration of appropriate monitoring, reassessment, and retesting.

Target Audience

This program is designed for pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals interested in the clinical application of functional gastrointestinal testing and evidence-informed approaches to managing patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.

Learning Objectives

Select appropriate functional GI testing based on symptom patterns, prior conventional evaluation, and the likelihood that results will influence clinical management.

Interpret functional GI test results as patterns rather than isolated values, integrating markers of digestive function, inflammation, intestinal barrier integrity, and microbial activity with the patient's history, medications, and diet.

Differentiate clinically actionable findings from incidental, diet-related, or potentially misleading results, including common limitations and sources of false-positive and false-negative findings in stool and breath testing.

Develop a sequenced therapeutic plan using the 5R framework based on the patient's clinical presentation and relevant testing results, including appropriate monitoring and criteria for reassessment.
