MDA Case Discussion: Cardiac Care in Neuromuscular Disease

This program is virtual, 1 hour program that aims to engage clinicians in the real-world evaluation and management of cardiac complications associated with pediatric-onset NMDs, including muscular dystrophies and Friedreich’s ataxia. Attendees will join expert faculty as they explore real-world cases of cardiac manifestations while referencing evolving care and treatment strategies. The live event will also be distributed for on-demand learning across MDA’s Care Center Network.

The focus of the program will be on the early recognition and management of cardiac involvement in pediatric-onset NMD, including DMD, BMD, LGMD, FSHD and Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA). Cardiac disease is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in these conditions and often develops silently, requiring neurologists to play a proactive role in surveillance, early recognition, and care coordination.

Target Audience

The target audience for this program includes neurologists, neuromuscular specialists, neurology fellows and residents, and advanced practice providers involved in the care of children and adolescents with pediatric-onset NMD. Cardiologists and cardiology trainees with an interest in NMD-related cardiac care may also benefit from participation.

Learning Objectives

Identify patterns of cardiac involvement in pediatric-onset NMD, including DMD, BMD LGMD, FSHD and FRDA.

Apply cardiac imaging and ECG findings to support early detection and referral.

Apply evidence-based approaches to cardiac care, including cardioprotective therapies and arrhythmia risk assessment, as part of a multidisciplinary care team.
