Sexuality and Menopause

By the year 2030, an estimated 1.2 billion women worldwide will be post-menopausal, underscoring a rapidly growing patient population requiring specialized care. This milestone is preceded by perimenopause, a five- to seven-year period marked by the gradual decline of estrogen, progesterone, and androgens. During this transition, patients frequently experience a cascade of symptoms, including irregular menstrual patterns, vasomotor symptoms (VMS) such as hot flashes, and genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Notably, the hormonal declines associated with menopause have profound consequences on female sexuality, leading to significant increases in sexual dysfunction as patients age. This accredited CE activity will focus on  common postmenopausal sexual dysfunctions and their management.

Target Audience

This activity was designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and dietitians.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the physiologic and hormonal foundations of menopause.
  • Identify common sexual dysfunctions and concerns experienced by postmenopausal women.
  • Describe appropriate assessment of sexual function and therapeutic interventions and management strategies for sexual dysfunctions in postmenopausal women.
  • Evaluate the impact of perimenopausal and post-menopausal transitions on female sexual health by recognizing the increasing prevalence rates of sexual difficulties and disorders as patients age.
