Ansar Hassan, MD PhD

Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, I earned my medical degree from McGill University in 1998. I then completed my residency in cardiac surgery at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2007, after successfully completing both my Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons certification in Cardiac Surgery and a PhD in Social Epidemiology and Clinical Biostatistics, I pursued advanced fellowship training in Greenville, North Carolina under the mentorship of Dr. Randolph Chitwood, a global leader in robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
I began my career as an attending cardiac surgeon at the New Brunswick Heart Centre in Saint John, New Brunswick in 2009 where I helped develop both the minimally invasive cardiac surgery program and a robust clinical outcomes research initiative.
In 2021, I relocated to Portland, Maine with my wife and three children and joined MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. I currently serve as Director of Cardiac Surgery Quality and Research, Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery, and Surgical Lead of the Maine Medical Center Mitral Center of Excellence.
I have also had the privilege of serving as President of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons, and I am honored to be the only practicing cardiac surgeon in Maine to have been elected to the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons.
