The Next Chapter in Insulin Therapy: Harnessing the Clinical Potential of Once-Weekly Basal Insulins in Type 2 Diabetes Practice
Despite continued advances in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D), achieving optimal glycemic control remains an ongoing challenging, with delays in basal insulin initiation and intensification contributing to persistent gaps in patient care. New and emerging once-weekly basal insulin formulations may help to address patient- and clinician-related barriers associated with daily basal insulin therapy while introducing new considerations for treatment selection, dosing, and titration. In this live chapter meeting, gain greater insight into the evolving role of once-weekly basal insulin in T2D management, including insulin icodec and insulin efsitora alfa. Join your peers to work through and discuss interactive clinical cases exploring practical strategies for overcoming therapeutic inertia with basal insulin, evaluating potential candidates for once-weekly therapy, and building confidence in integrating evolving insulin formulations into individualized T2D care.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for diabetology and endocrinology clinicians, including physicians, advanced practice providers (NP/PA), and pharmacy practitioners.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
- ssess the efficacy and safety of emerging once-weekly basal insulin therapies in type 2 diabetes (T2D), considering insulin-naïve and insulin experienced patients
- Develop comprehensive proactive patient monitoring and assessment strategies to effectively identify individuals with T2D who are candidates for basal insulin initiation
- Integrate multidisciplinary, coordinated care strategies to address contributors to therapeutic inertia considering basal insulin initiation
- Identify clinical scenarios in which once-weekly basal insulin may be an optimal treatment choice for individuals with T2D
Commerical Support
This activity is supported by an educational grant from Lilly.
