The Future of Pediatric Practice 2026 (FPP2026) presentations will be led by experts in pediatrics, interactive workshops, wellness activities, a medical student research forum, a competitive resident forum, and plenty of time for networking, FPP2026 offers something for everyone.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses and other health care providers involved in pediatric care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to: 

Youth Sports Safety 2026 

  • Describe the historical evolution of sports medicine and youth sports safety standards, including major developments in concussion management, heat illness prevention, emergency action planning, and safe return-to-play practices.
  • Review the role of organizations such as the FHSAA and Korey Stringer Institute (KSI) in establishing and advancing evidence-based athlete safety policies, including heat acclimatization standards, environmental monitoring, hydration protocols, AED access, and emergency preparedness requirements.
  • Discuss the impact of statewide advocacy and collaborative sports medicine initiatives, including the work of FASMed in connecting healthcare organizations such as FC-AAP, FOS, and FAFP with secondary school athletics to improve athlete safety, education, and access to care.
  • Examine emerging challenges and future directions in sports medicine for 2026 and beyond, including technology integration, policy standardization, youth sports specialization, mental health considerations, and balancing athlete safety with performance expectations.

2026 Keeping Our Kids Safe 

  • Identify key components and current recommendations of the pediatric preparticipation physical evaluation (PPE), including cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurologic, and mental health screening, while distinguishing between clearance, restriction, and further evaluation.
  • Recognize important nuances and controversies in sports preparticipation screening, including the role and limitations of ECG screening, management of athletes with prior concussion, sickle cell trait, eating disorders, hypertension, and congenital or acquired cardiac conditions.
  • Review the most common causes of sports-related injury and sudden death in young athletes, with emphasis on concussion, overuse injuries, heat illness, sudden cardiac arrest, exertional collapse, and catastrophic cervical spine injury.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality in youth sports participation, including anticipatory guidance on conditioning, hydration, emergency action planning, safe return-to-play decisions, and sport-specific injury prevention.

Head Games: Pediatric Concussion Management 

  • Review sports related concussion physiology. 
  • Understand evidence-based return to learn steps.
  • Understand State of Florida high school level return to play protocol.

When Winning Hurts: Mental Health and Substance Use in Youth and Collegiate Sports:

  • Recognize risk factors and early warning signs of mental health concerns and substance use among youth and collegiate athletes, including the impact of sport culture, performance pressure, and developmental transitions. 
  • Apply evidence-based screening and early intervention strategies in pediatric practice to identify and address mental health and substance use concerns in athletic populations. 
  • Develop collaborative care approaches, including appropriate referral and coordination with families, coaches, and multidisciplinary teams, to support athletes during the transition to collegiate sports and beyond.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports and Fueling the Young Athlete:

  • Identify the clinical signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) in pediatric and adolescent athletes. 
  • Apply evidence-based approaches to the evaluation, management, and prevention of REDs, including appropriate nutritional counseling and monitoring strategies. 
  • Integrate best practices for sports nutrition and energy balance into routine pediatric care to support healthy growth, athletic performance, and long-term health outcomes.

Knee pain: Arthroscopy or Ace Wrap? 

  • Identify common pediatric knee injuries encountered in clinical practice.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies for the outpatient evaluation and management of pediatric knee injuries.
  • Differentiate pediatric knee injuries that can be managed conservatively from those requiring referral to an orthopedic specialist.
  • Determine appropriate indications for advanced imaging in the assessment of pediatric knee injuries.

Hands On rotations 

  • Demonstrate proper examination techniques and evidence-based management strategies for common pediatric orthopedic injuries and musculoskeletal conditions through hands-on practice.
  • Apply practical orthopedic assessment and treatment skills to improve the evaluation and management of pediatric patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

Navigating Uncertainty in Medicine: Practical Tools to Address Chaos

  • Identify compounding stressors that lead to overwhelm
  • Differentiate between overwhelm and stress
  • Learn the 4 R's of Uncertainty
  • Learn ways to prevent burnout

    Changes in Pediatrics in Florida

    • Describe recent advocacy initiatives and outcomes led by FCAAP that impact pediatric practice and child health policy.
    • Identify effective strategies to in advocacy and organizational activities.
    • Discuss upcoming advocacy priorities and organizational goals that influence pediatric healthcare delivery.
    • Apply opportunities for individual and collective advocacy engagement within FCAAP to support improved patient and community health outcomes.

    Listening First: Shared Decisions That Build Trust in Pediatric Obesity Care

    • Select evidence-based, guideline-recommended screening strategies to diagnose pediatric patients with obesity
    • Apply strategies to discuss weight management with pediatric patients and/or their caregivers in a culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate manner
    • Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans for pediatric patients with obesity

    Connections Matter: Reframing Resilience in Early Childhood via Relational Health- Outpatient Focused

    • Understand the definition of early relational health and components of it
    • Identify positive childhood experiences that buffer adversity and lead to positive outcomes

    From Conflict to Collaboration: Navigating Difficult Encounters in Pediatric Hospital Medicine

    • Discuss conflict as it relates to inpatient medicine
    • Review conflict resolution styles and take a conflict resolution inventory
    • Utilize case-based scenarios to implement a framework for conflict management

    • Describe the epidemiology, morbidity, and mortality of vaccine-preventable diseases across the pre-vaccination, vaccination, and post-vaccination eras.
    • Analyze the impact of immunization programs on population health outcomes, including reductions in disease incidence, complications, and mortality.
    • Evaluate the potential public health consequences of declining vaccination rates, including increased vaccine hesitancy and changes to immunization policies, and apply this knowledge to support effective patient and community education.

    Innovations in Pediatric Behavioral Health: Virtual, Mobile, and Florida-Specific Evidence-Based Resources

    • Understand the different types of evidence-based therapy treatment options available in Florida.
    • Identify evidence-based virtual, mobile app–based, and state-specific mental health therapy resources that can be incorporated into pediatric clinical practice to support patient care and access to services.
    • Compare the appropriate use of digital and community-based mental health therapy resources based on patient needs, clinical presentation, and insurance type.

    Food Allergy Strategies: Targeted Therapies for Pediatric Patients

    • Review the prevalence and burden of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergies in the pediatric population
    • Discuss newly approved therapies to treat pediatric patients with IgE-mediated food allergy
    • Identify strategies to incorporate multidisciplinary/interprofessional coordination of care to optimize outcomes of pediatric patients with food allergies

    Medicaid Matters

    • Describe the structure, function, and legislative history of Medicaid and CHIP and their roles in supporting pediatric health care delivery in the United States.
    • Analyze recent and proposed policy changes, including those associated with HR1, and their potential impact on access to care, coverage, and health outcomes for children.
    • Identify strategies for pediatric providers to engage in advocacy and align with organizational efforts, including those of the American Academy of Pediatrics, to support and strengthen public insurance programs for children.

    Criteria for Success 
    Statements of credit will be awarded based on the participant's attendance and submission of the activity evaluation form.
